Blackfield is back with another creatively titled album, V. This collaborative project between prog rock giant Steven Wilson and Israeli pop singer Aviv Geffen is something I completely forgot about after their sophomore release. So I haven't even listened to Welcome to my DNA (III) or Blackfield IV. Don't worry, this is something I will remedy very soon.
When I saw Steven Wilson in concert, during one of his between song rants he mentioned how bands back in the day would release new music just about every year. This gave artists a little more freedom to experiment. If fans didn't like it, no problem, new music will be coming next year. This is the philosophy that Steven Wilson adopts, and I truly appreciate him for it.
Experiment is a bit of a strong word to use here, everything Steven Wilson does has his signature sound. There's just no getting around the fact that Steven Wilson is gonna Steven Wilson. What sets Blackfield part from his main solo work is the shorter, "poppier" songs. The longest track on here is 4.5 minutes.
Well, I haven't said very much about the music on V, but there isn't much to say. It sounds just like Blackfield, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you're a fan of Blackfield already you know exactly what to expect, another album full of solid melancholic sad guy proggy pop songs.
