This little turd first got skunked back in September 2014. She was out in the backyard doing her business when she ran right up to a skunk, sniffed it’s booty, and got a faceful of skunk spray. We panicked a little bit and immediately brought her into the house to wash her off, and the smell inside the house lingered for weeks.
Exactly one week later, at a completely different house, in a completely different backyard, she gets skunked again! We learned our lesson this time and cleaned her off outside the best we could before bringing her inside. It didn’t smell as bad inside this time around, but there’s just not avoiding getting that skunk smell everywhere.
Below is Leeler about a week after her 2nd skunking. Notice she has a slight brownish hue due to her multiple baking soda & peroxide baths.
Since then we’ve adopted another pup (Chubbs) and moved to a new neighborhood, which has even more skunks (like...hella). We’ve had several close calls on our walks with the random skunk that we run into in the street. Since we have our pups on a leash, we can at least pull them back when we encounter a skunk. But, in the backyard, all bets are off. We're cautious and clap real loud just before letting them out. One time it worked, and I spotted a skunk lurking around in the back, and took my dogs out front to make the pee.
One night after getting back from a Talib Kweli concert, I opened the back door, clapped loudly a few times, and then let my dogs out. About a minute later, the skunk smell just starting oozing into the house. I look out back and Leela is rolling around in the mud trying to get the smell of skunk off of her. Chubbs was waiting at the backdoor, and when I smelled his face, I was worried that he got hit too.
We had no choice but to bring them inside to wash them off, again with our usual baking soda / peroxide potion followed by regular dogface shampoo. When all was said and done, Leela smelled the worst, especially on her face, and Chubbs turned out to be just fine. He must have been in the area, but avoided a direct hit.
I’m sure you’ve smelled skunk before, but concentrated skunk smells like garlic mixed with burning rubber tires. All the baths in the world won't get the smell completely out, it just takes about a month before it goes completely away. Dumb dog never learns.
